자기소개서 잘 쓰는 법

많은 학생들이 우리말로든 영어로든 글을 쓰는 것을 어려워하고, 특히 자기소개서를 작성하는 것에 골머리를 앓는 가장 큰 이유는 솔직하게 있는 그대로의 자신을 드러내는 것에 익숙하지 않기 때문입니다. 아무래도 자기소개서 같은 글을 쓰다 보면 과거의 일을 조금씩 미화하여 글을 읽는 사람, 구체적으로는 입학사정관에서 감동을 주려고 노력하기 마련입니다.

그러나 이 글을 읽는 학생 모두 잠시 초등학교 시절을 회상해보기 바랍니다. 같은 반 친구들 중에서 특별히 공부를 잘 하지도 못하고, 다른 특기가 있는 것도 아닌 지극히 평범한, 어떤 면에서는 많이 뒤쳐졌다고 여긴 어눌한 친구가 쓴 어느 하루치 일기가 담임 선생님은 물론 같은 반 모든 학생들을 감동시킨 적이 한 두 번은 있을 것입니다.

그런 경험이 전혀 없다면, 한글을 배우지 못한 채 일생을 문맹 상태로 살다가 뒤늦게 한글을 깨치고 자신이 살아온 과정을 담담히 회상한 할머니들의 글을 읽고 크게 감동한 적이 있을 것입니다. 충분히 배워도 좋은 글을 쓰지 못하는 경우도 많지만, 배움이 부족해도 세계적인 문호의 글 못지 않은 감동적인 글을 쓸 수도 있습니다.

어눌한 친구의 하루치 일기나 배움의 기회를 갖지 못한 할머니의 글이 지닌 공통점은 솔직함입니다. 스스로를 내세우거나 미화할 필요가 없을 때 스스로를 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있고, 스스로를 객관적으로 바라볼 때 진솔한 글을 쓸 수 있습니다. 명쾌한 논리 전개나 화려한 미사여구로 읽는 사람을 감동시킬 수 있지만, 이러한 감동은 마음 속 깊은 곳에서 우러나오는 것은 아닙니다.

세상에 태어난 모든 생명체는 그 생명을 누릴 권리와 자유가 있는 것처럼, 이 세상에 가치 없는 인생은 없습니다. 모든 사람의 인생에는 나름의 이야기가 있고, 모든 이야기에는 누군가의 삶이 녹아 있기 때문에 항상 재미있고 감동적일 수 밖에 없습니다. 다시 말해서 이 글을 읽는 학생 모두가 20년 남짓한 인생을 살았지만, 나름의 이야기가 있고, 그 모든 이야기는 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없는 소중함을 지니고 있습니다.

이야기의 소중함은 솔직하게 드러내면 드러낼수록 더욱 빛나기 마련입니다. 아무리 감싸려고 애써도 진주에서 새어 나오는 빛을 가릴 수 없듯이, 감추려고 해도 드러나는 것이 진실입니다. 그리고 자기소개서에 진실이 아닌 이야기를 쓰게 되면, 글 자체가 모순을 드러내게 됩니다. 거짓말을 하는 것도 쉽지 않지만, 글로 거짓을 지어내는 것은 정말 특별한 재능입니다. 허구의 세계를 창조해내는 소설가가 그 재능을 활용한 대표적 사례입니다.

예컨대 이 글을 읽는 학생 중 누군가가 어느 초등학생의 일기를 읽는다면, 그 내용이 진실인지 아닌지 금방 알아차릴 것입니다. 마찬가지로 대학의 입학사정관 역시 자기소개서의 진실 여부를 곧장 알아차릴 수 있습니다. 만약 어느 입학사정관이 고등학교 3학년 학생이 쓴 자기소개서의 진실 여부를 알아차리지 못한다면, 그 입학사정관이 지나치게 많은 자기소개서를 읽어야 했거나 자질이 많이 부족한 것이겠지요.

모든 대학에서 선발하고 싶어하는 학생은 대학 졸업 후 다양한 방식으로 학교의 명예와 자부심을 높여주는 인재입니다. 사회적으로 크게 성공한 졸업생도 학교의 명예와 자부심을 높여줄 수 있지만, 건강한 사회의 토대를 이루는 책임감 있고 성실한 시민 역시 학교의 명예와 자부심을 높여주는 인재입니다. 그 어느 경우에나 미래를 예측할 수 있는 것은 오로지 과거를 통해서만 가능합니다.

고등학교 시절 무엇인가에 열정을 쏟고 꾸준하고 성실하게 노력했다면, 그 학생은 대학에 입학해서도 계속 “열정”과 “성실”을 발휘할 가능성이 높고, 그런 학생이 사회에 나가 학교의 명예와 자부심을 높여줄 좋은 시민이 될 것입니다. 그렇다면 자기소개서에 담아야 할 내용은 너무도 당연하게 고등학교 시절 발휘한 열정과 성실이 될 수 밖에 없습니다.

고등학교는 “고등한 학문을 가르치고 배우는 교육 기관”인만큼 고등학교 시절 가장 중요한 것은 학교 공부이고, 학교 공부에서 가장 중요한 것은 스스로 노력해서 발전하는 것입니다. “킹즈맨: 시크릿 에이전트(King’s Man: The Secret Service)”라는 영화에 나오는 대사처럼 다른 학생과 비교해서 얼마나 잘하고 못하냐가 중요한 것이 아니라 어제의 나에 비해서 얼마나 나아졌느냐가 중요합니다.

고등학교 시절 공부를 잘 했던 학생만이 사회에 나와서 성공하는 것은 절대로 아닙니다. 고등학교 시절 공부에 소홀했어도 사회적으로 성공한 사람은 셀 수 없이 많습니다. 하지만, 고등한 학문을 가르치고 배우는 교육 기관인 고등학교에 다니면서 학업을 소홀히 하면 적어도 고등학교 시절은 왠지 자신이 없어지고 주눅이 들게 마련입니다.

비록 최근 우리나라 대학이 완전히 취업 준비 기관으로 전락하기는 했어도, 여전히 학문을 연구하고 전수하는 기관이라는 정의에서 자유로울 수 없습니다. 학문을 연구하고 전수하려면 먼저 기존의 지식을 열심히 공부하여 익혀나갈 필요가 있습니다. 고등학교 과정에서 공부를 열심히 한다는 것은 바로 기존의 지식 체계를 나름대로 열심히 배웠다는 것을 의미하고, 이는 새로운 지식을 창조할 수 있는 기반을 마련했다는 것을 의미합니다.

결국 고등학교 시절 그 어떤 과목이라도 열정적으로 성실하게 공부한 경험이 있어야 합니다. 그리고 가장 중요한 점은 대한민국의 60만 고등학교 3학년 수험생 모두가 고등학교 시절 적어도 한번은 열정적으로 무엇인가를 공부한 적이 있다는 것입니다. 물론 그 열정이 성실하게 지속되지 못해서 그렇지, 누구나 “돈오(頓悟, 단번에 깨달음)”는 할 수 있습니다.

물론 자기소개서에 적은 “돈오”가 고등학교 내신 성적이나 다른 증빙 자료에 의해 뒷받침되지 않을 경우, “점수(漸修, 꾸준한 수행)”가 없는 관계로 제대로 인정받을 수 없습니다. 어쨌든 중요한 점은 자기소개서의 첫 번째 문항에는 “깨닫고 꾸준히 행한 과정”을 써야 한다는 것입니다. 1,500년 이상 한반도에 영향을 미쳐온 불교(佛敎, Buddhism)가 대학 입시 자기소개서 첫 번째 문항에까지 영향력을 행사하고 있는 셈입니다.

그리고 사회를 이루고 사는 것이 인간의 가장 큰 특징인 만큼, 열정과 성실을 바탕으로 무엇인가에 전념하다 보면 당연히 동료나 선후배와 함께 할 수 밖에 없고, 그 과정에서 협동심과 지도력을 함양하는 것은 당연합니다. 협동심과 지도력은 배려, 나눔, 협력, 갈등 관리 등을 실천하면서 키울 수 있습니다. 결국 자기소개서 두 번째와 세 번째 문항은 열정을 지니고 성실하게 학과 공부를 한 것에 더하여 얼마나 열정적으로 그리고 성실하게 학교 생활을 했느냐를 물어보는 것입니다.

혼자 공부하는 것보다는 함께 공부하는 것이 효율적이기 때문에 어떤 주제든 깊이 있게 공부하려면 반드시 동료와 선후배와 함께 공부할 수 밖에 없습니다. 개인 종목보다는 단체 종목의 운동 경기에, 특히 학교 대항 경기에 전교생이 열광하는 것도 이러한 까닭입니다. 이렇게 함께 무엇인가를 하다 보면 갈등과 알력이 생기기 마련이고, 이 갈등과 알력을 극복하면서 무엇인가를 계속 함께 하기 위해서는 배려하고 나누고 협력할 수 밖에 없습니다.

현재 각 대학의 수시전형에 제출해야 하는 자기소개서는 다음의 세 가지 사항을 공통적으로 포함하고 있습니다.

(1) 고등학교 재학 기간 중에 학업에 기울인 노력과 학습 경험에 대해, 배우고 느낀 점을 중심으로 기술해 주시기 바랍니다. (1,000자 이내, 띄어쓰기 포함)
(2) 고등학교 재학 기간 중에 본인이 의미를 두고 노력했던 교내 활동을 배우고 느낀 점을 중심으로 3개 이내로 기술해 주시기 바랍니다. 단, 교외 활동 중 학교장의 허락을 받고 참여한 활동은 포함됩니다. (1,500자 이내, 띄어쓰기 포함)
(3) 학교생활 중 배려, 나눔, 협력, 갈등 관리 등을 실천한 사례를 들고, 그 과정을 통해 배우고 느낀 점을 기술해 주시기 바랍니다. (1,000자 이내, 띄어쓰기 포함)

지금까지 제 말을 잘 따라온 학생이라면 수시전형 자기소개서에서 무엇을 요구하고 있는지 이해할 수 있을 것입니다.

네 번째 문항은 학교별로 약간 차이가 있습니다.

(4) 고등학교 재학 기간(또는 최근 3년간) 읽었던 책 중 자신에게 가장 큰 영향을 준 책을 3권 이내로 선정하고 그 이유를 기술하여 주십시오. (서울대)
(4) 해당 모집단위에 지원하게 된 동기와 이를 준비하기 위해 노력한 과정이나 지원자의 교육환경(가정, 학교, 지역 등)이 성장에 미친 영향 등을 경험을 바탕으로 구체적으로 기술하시오. (1,500자 이내) (연세대)
(4) 해당 모집단위 지원 동기를 포함하여 고려대학교가 지원자를 선발해야 하는 이유는 기술해 주시기 바랍니다. (1,000자 이내) (고려대)

서울대는 독서 경험을 통해 학생의 지적 능력을 평가하겠다는 것이고, 연세대는 학생의 가정 환경 같은 문화적 자본(cultural capital)을 중요하게 평가하겠다는 것이고, 고려대는 당차게 자기 자랑을 할 수 있는 학생의 패기를 중요하게 평가하겠다는 것입니다. 한마디로 이 세 대학이 지향하는 바가 네 번째 문항에 고스란히 드러나있습니다. 이 세 대학에 지원하는 학생은 대학에서 무엇을 요구하는지 정확하게 파악하고 자기소개서를 작성하기 바랍니다.

연세대 수시전형 특기자전형에서 요구하는 자기소개서는 이 네 가지를 세 가지로 변형하여 작성할 것을 요구합니다.

(1) 고등학교 재학 중 특기자로서 본인의 역량을 가장 잘 나타내는 성취를 중요하다고 생각하는 순서대로 최대 3개까지 작성하여 주십시오. 또한 각각의 특기역량에 대해서 경험적 사례를 들어 성취 과정 및 의미를 기술하여 주십시오. (2,650자 이내)
(2) 고등학교 재학 중 진로선택을 위해 노력한 과정을 바탕으로 지원학과 선택의 계기를 설명하고, 연세대학교 입학 후 자신의 진로를 발전시키기 위한 계획을 기술하여 주십시오. (1,000자 이내)
(3) 다음 두 질문 중 하나를 선택하여 작성하여 주십시오. (1,000자 이내)
• 지원자의 개인적 환경(가정, 학교, 지역, 국가 등)에 대해 설명하고, 그 환경적 특성이 지원자 자신의 삶에 미친 영향을 경험적 사례를 들어 구체적으로 기술하여 주십시오.
• 지원자의 삶에서 경험했던 가장 큰 위기와 좌절 상황이 무엇이었는지 설명하고, 그것을 극복하는 과정에서 새롭게 발견한 자신의 가치에 대해 경험적 사례를 들어 구체적으로 기술하여 주십시오.

연세대 언더우드 국제학부(Underwood International College, UIC)에서 요구하는 자기소개서 문항은 다음과 같습니다.

Essay Question 1 (600 words or less)

Essay Options: Select from one of the following.

  1. Describe a personal, non-academic experience or achievement in which you had to make a difficult decision, and relate the ways in which this experience changed you as a person.
  2. Provide an example of a leadership situation where you were able to display the characteristics of humility and cooperation when achieving your goals. What were the challenges that you faced through the exercise of your leadership, and how did you overcome them?
  3. Choose a real person other than a close relative - a teacher, classmate, friend, etc. - with whom you have had a direct relationship. Alternatively, describe a character that is either fictional or historical. Describe in detail how that person or character changed the way you look at the world around you or at life in general.
  4. One of UIC’s greatest strengths is its immense diversity. Describe how your own personal background would add to UIC’s diversity and why your personal traits would stand out even in such a highly multi-lingual and multi-cultural institution.
  5. Topic of your choice.

Essay Question 2 (300 words or less)

Underwood International College (UIC) is an all-English liberal arts college within a major Korean university. What makes you a suitable fit for UIC and what have you done to prepare for a rigorous liberal arts education? How do you plan to achieve your future goals at UIC and beyond?

여기까지 설명하고 이 글을 끝내야 하겠지만, 많은 학생들이 그래서 도대체 자기소개서를 어떻게 쓰라는 말이냐고 질문할 것입니다. 이에 대한 대답으로 오래 전 저와 함께 공부했던 학생이 연세대 언더우드 국제학부에 제출한 자기소개서를 소개합니다. 이 학생은 연세대 언더우드 국제학부를 졸업하고, 지금은 세계 최고의 기업에서 근무하고 있습니다.

이 학생의 자기소개서를 읽어보면 알겠지만, 첫 번째 문항에서 이 학생이 소개한 일화는 그다지 대단할 것이 없는 누구나 경험할 수 있는 지극히 소소하고 일상적인 것입니다. 하지만, 고등학교 1학년이라는 어린 나이에는 그 일이 대단히 중요하고 인생을 좌우할 수 있는 커다란 갈림길이 될 수도 있다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 또한 이 과정에서 이 학생은 놀랍도록 성장했습니다. 그리고 가장 중요한 점은 이 학생은 이 이야기를 너무나 진솔하게 썼다는 사실입니다.

첫 번째 문항에서 이 학생이 원래 쓴 내용은 하나도 더하거나 빼지 않았습니다. 물론 전체적인 글의 구성이나 개별적인 문장의 표현은 제가 다듬어 주었지만, 이 글의 저작권은 분명히 이 학생에게 있습니다. 그리고 두 번째 문항은 읽어보면 알겠지만, 이 학생이 쓴 내용에서 약간 수정했습니다. 물론 수업 시간에 함께 읽은 텍스트를 바탕으로 수정했기 때문에 이 학생도 그 내용을 잘 알고 있었습니다.

그리고 그 당시에는 연세대 언더우드 국제학부에서 요구하는 자기소개서 문항이 지금과는 약간 달랐습니다.

Essay Question 1 (600 words or less)

Essay Options: Select from one of the following.
1. Describe a personal, non-academic experience or achievement in which you had to make a difficult decision, and relate the ways in which this experience changed you as a person.
2. We are bombarded with news every day, ranging from the frivolous to the catastrophic. Take one current national or international issue and explain why it is important to you.
3. Choose a real person with whom you have or had a direct relationship (relative, teacher, friend, etc.) or a character that is either fictional or historical. Describe in detail how that person or character changed the way you look at the world around you or at life in general.
4. Diversity is not only important but also a fact of life in an international college such as UIC. Describe how your own personal background would add to that diversity.
5. Topic of your choice.

Unfortunately, cartoons have never been recognized in our society as the proper medium of expressing our original thoughts and artistic desire. This gigantic prejudice made a nearly unbreakable bar for a timid high-school freshgirl to be on her most wanted cartoonists’ society, the Armada. It gave one of the hardest moments for me to decide which club activity to join, since I would have spent a completely different school life, depending on the type of the circle I took part in. I was wobbling between the cartoonists’ society and the English newspaper editorial department, for I enjoyed both writing something in English and drawing cartoons.

Had I been an English newspaper reporter, I would have made my English more accurately and fluently and would probably have experienced something more academic. However, it would be kind of discontent, because few students bother to read our school’s English newspapers, even though they are perfectly free. On the other hand, the Armada’s annual comic book, the Novice has recorded a very unique history: over 80 percent of the school students bother to buy the annual comic book and simply love it, even if its contents are only created by the student cartoonists. At last, I lifted up the heavy biased bar, hoping my cartoons would be acknowledged as a kind of artistic work, and fortunately, I passed the audition.

Though all the fresh members were entirely strange to each other, everybody was willing to be friends, based on the common interest in cartoons. The process of publishing our annual comic book was very complicated and overburdened. It had to go through far more dark crises to bring our intellectual and aesthetic works under the bright sun light than what I had expected. Nevertheless, we, the novices enjoyed every step, always cooperated, did our best, and were invincible to produce our Novice . It was a great teamwork that I learned in my first year on the Armada.

Next year, I was elected as the captain of the Armada to plan and lead all our activities in OOOO. It was a great honor, and at the same time, a titanic responsibility, to set the sail of the Armada and cross over the unknown sea successfully. In order to make a-year-long sailing better, I tried to establish some of the important principles to organize our activities fruitfully. I had to write some of the basic rules, erase them, and rewrite again; and yet, I was never fed up with such trials and errors but welcomed. Eventually, I could have some of my own guidelines in mind; (1) listen to all the opinions of the members impartially, (2) do my best to realize the better opinions of the members’, and (3) take responsibility for the entire process as the leader.

Thanks to these simple rules for a leader, I could overcome financial difficulties and manage to accomplish what the members wanted. The Armada won several more achievements in OOOO than usual, such as the first membership training trip, the first badge symbolizing the society, additional monetary supports, and the thickest Novice with the better quality ever. Besides, I also personally gained too much, including teamwork, responsibility, leadership and friendship.

A cowardly freshgirl of only two years ago was gone; however, still a few conservative teachers are looking down on cartoons because of regarding them as but childish. Now that I handed down the baton to my juniors, never do I regret deciding to sign up for the Armada. On the contrary, I could enjoy the best time with the help of the Armada. For us, the Armada members, drawing cartoons is beyond mere amusements, rather it is one of the best medium to embody our own imagination and creativity. Now, looking back on my brief life, nothing has more influenced me than the Armada, and all the experiences I have gone through on the Armada greatly helped me mature as a person as well as a leader and will help further.

Essay Question 2 (300 words or less)

The Underwood International College is an all-English liberal arts college located within a Korean university. UIC offers a truly multinational experience, with students and faculty from all over the world. As a relatively new college, UIC is always thinking of ways to define itself and its educational mission. In your view, what makes UIC an interesting or unique place? As a potential student here, what would you bring to UIC, and why is UIC your college of choice?

Even though the liberal arts college has quite a long history in the United States, the UIC is quite unfamiliar to almost all Koreans or even most Asians. In fact, I also first heard of it only several months ago. However, I am fascinated with the UIC, because it is not only the first and only attempt to offer the liberal arts education among the Korean universities but also best prepared to provide the students with the international atmosphere.

I have a great interest in the tradition of the Western liberal arts education that began with the Aristotelian ideal of an educated person. According to the medieval educational ideal, obtaining the knowledge of the trivium and the quadrivium, we could be liberated from the bondage of ignorance. I don’t have any real confidence of that kind of great ideal, and yet I feel some kind of possibility of becoming more humane through the study of the Comparative Literature and Culture and the International Studies, or at least less prejudiced.

Moreover, the international atmosphere of the UIC is, frankly speaking, a more exciting feature. In the surroundings of only using English, the very lingua franca of our time, I could build a competitive edge in communicating with the world. It is also fantastic that I could spend my 4-year undergraduate life with the professors and the peers with multinational backgrounds, which is obviously a rare and special experience in Korea.

All these distinct characteristics have made the UIC my most wanted college, where I expect a liberating academic experience and a multi-oriented university education. I am eager to hold a chance to devote all my passion and efforts to be a true learned person of our time who is not well-rounded or versatile but tries to understand anybody in the world through not only our eyes but their own eyes. I believe the UIC could offer to their students this kind of compound eyes liberating all the humanity truly.
